Our story

Why I show people my home

I was born into a nomadic family in the Altai Mountains of Bayan-Ölgii, at the far western edge of Mongolia. Most people here are Kazakh, and the traditions you travel to see, from eagle hunting to life in the ger, are the ones I grew up with.

I started working as a tour guide in 2007, leading small groups on hikes and horseback rides through the mountains I know best. In 2014 I founded Sayat Travel LLC.

We grew step by step. Our groups became larger and our routes went further: our first Gobi tours in 2019, journeys well beyond Western Mongolia from 2022, and climbing and other adventure trips from 2023. Today we run festival trips, Gobi expeditions, driving adventures, climbing and photography tours.

What has not changed is how we travel. We stay close to local people, so you can share their everyday life, traditions and culture, and every journey supports the families who welcome you.

Our home ground

Western Mongolia, from the inside

Bayan-Ölgii is Mongolia’s westernmost province and home to its Kazakh community. In September and October, eagle hunters gather for festivals in Sagsai, Tolbo, Altantsogts and near Ölgii. In winter, families move their herds through the Altai to their winter camps.

Local knowledge matters most where the map runs out. Roads turn into tracks, phone signal comes and goes, and weather can close a pass in an afternoon. Knowing the families, the routes and the seasons first-hand is what lets us plan journeys that work here, and change them safely when we need to.

How you travel

On the road

Distances in Mongolia are long and many tracks are unpaved. Depending on your route and group size, you travel in one of our own Land Cruisers or with drivers we contract for larger groups. Days on the road bring lunch stops in open valleys, river crossings and visits to village shops.

Our own vehicles

Sayat Travel owns four Toyota Land Cruisers and a minitruck. For larger groups we also work with contracted drivers and transport providers, so the vehicle you travel in depends on your route and group size.

Where you sleep

Making camp

Depending on the route, you stay in ger camps, in a local family’s ger or in tents. On camping nights the team pitches camp and sets up a dining table with a view.

What you eat

At the table

Meals are cooked at camp and by the local families who host us. Expect khorkhog, mutton and vegetables cooked with hot stones inside a milk can; buuz dumplings; meat stews from the ger stove; and picnic lunches on a riverbank.

Whom you meet

With nomadic families

We visit herding and eagle-hunting families along the way, choosing them to suit each itinerary. Once your tour is confirmed we let them know you are coming, so they can prepare. You might be poured milk tea in their ger, watch the evening milking in the sheep pen or see aaruul, dried curd, laid out in the sun.

What you will do

Out in the landscape

Between the visits are the journeys themselves: hiking and horseback riding in the Altai, the eagle festivals in autumn, Gobi expeditions, driving adventures, climbing and photography tours. Every private tour can be shaped around what you most want to do.
