Eagle Hunter Festivals in Bayan-Ölgii

For travelers interested in eagle hunting, September and October are an especially exciting time to visit Bayan-Ölgii. During these months, several eagle-hunting festivals take place across the province.

The festival season begins with smaller local events and continues through to the major Golden Eagle Festival in October.

Among the festivals held in the province are:

  • Altai Soum Eagle Festival — held in September
  • Sagsai Eagle Hunters Festival — held in September
  • Tolbo Lake Eagle Hunters Festival — held in September
  • Altantsögts Eagle Hunters Festival — held toward the end of September
  • Golden Eagle Festival — the major festival, generally held in the first week of October

These festivals give visitors several opportunities to meet eagle hunters, see their golden eagles and experience Kazakh eagle-hunting culture in different parts of Bayan-Ölgii.

The local soum festivals can be particularly interesting for travelers who want a more intimate experience. They bring together eagle hunters from the surrounding communities and can feel more connected to local village life.

The Golden Eagle Festival, on the other hand, is the largest and best-known event. It brings many eagle hunters together and has become an important cultural event for visitors from Mongolia and around the world.

Festival or Family Visit?

A festival and a family visit offer two very different experiences.

At a festival, you can see many eagle hunters and their birds together, watch competitions and experience the energy of a large cultural event.

But when you visit an eagle-hunting family in their home, the experience is much quieter. You can sit together in the ger, drink tsai chai (milk tea), share food, talk with the family and learn how the hunter works with his eagle.

For travelers who have enough time, combining a festival with a family visit can be one of the best ways to understand eagle-hunting culture in Western Mongolia. The festival shows you the public celebration of the tradition, while the family visit gives you a glimpse into the everyday life behind it.
